Sunday is Family Time

Family Days are an important part of a happy family. It is a crucial part of the basic foundation for a healthy family relationship. It can be any day of the week but most people have this on the weekends due to the fact that weekends are off-from-work days.

Family days often consists of activities that include the entire family. From swimming, going to the mall, going to church, or even staying at home. The important thing is, everyone should be present.

For us, Sunday is family time. We consider this day as the most important day of the week. We start it together and we end it together. Everything that we do on this day, we make sure that everyone participates. From market errands to house cleaning.  SUNDAY IS FOR FAMILY!

I've listed the top 5 family day activities that we consider as our Sunday regimen.

1. Market day

market day

Aside from the eyeful of vegetables, fish, and meat on Sundays, we find that going to the market together relaxes us. Sundays are normally the day when fish, vegetable, and meat dealers drop off fresh produce. So people are usually allotting Sundays as market days.

Even before our daughter was born, we've been doing this weekly. And now, we find that this activity teaches our daughter some street smarts when it comes to being around people, and we mean plenty of people. And of course, some haggling skills.

Nowadays, there are a lot of kids that won't even go near the market. The smell, the often wet floor, the noise, and so on; those are the things that you need to experience to be able to say that you've gone to the market (real market). No offense intended. We know that going to the grocery is a much more healthier alternative and the prices are almost the same. But come on, in the early days, the wet market is where the life is.

2. Sunday Lunch

Sunday Lunch

After getting wet and blood all over your shoes in the market, next comes the more relaxing part, preparing lunch. We've made it a habit to prepare a special meal for Sunday lunch. Not extravagant meals, but something that we normally don't eat. Like oven-baked whole chicken or grilled t-bone steaks. Mind you, these are "special meals" here in the Philippines.

Just like our market activity, the family is all together on this. The wife preps, the husband starts the grill, the daughter plays (as always). Sunday lunch is our family date. We believe that sharing meals intimately with the family is a very important factor in child-rearing.  No phones, no television, no distractions. Just plain old conversation and of course, a scrumptious meal.

3. Movie Time

Our go-to activity after our Sunday lunch is normally movie time. It doesn't matter if it's an old movie or a new blockbuster, the important thing, like the everything else, we are all in it together. We also find that watching a movie together strengthens our conversation time as a family. The fun part in this activity is usually after the movie. We talk about the movie, how it ended or how it should have ended. The twists, the story line, the dialogues, the actors, and so on. This is when we become "movie critics".

Our favorite genre is horror. Not just the "killing and gory type", but the supernatural ones. We're suckers for these types of movies. Good thing, the daughter doesn't really understand it yet.

4. House Chores

This is one of those activities that you really "need" to do on the weekend. We don't have a helper in the house and we have 6 furkids. So do the math. Our house is a total mess when the weekend comes. But turning this chore in to a fun activity is very important. The wife normally does the dishes and cleans up the kitchen. The husband is in charge of vacuuming and making sure that pet hairs are reduced to a minimum. And we've been successful in teaching our daughter on how to clean her toys. Well, basically, we just put her toys in a basin and she washes them with the sprayer. But it's a start.

Aside from the people living in it, we believe that a clean and organized house is what makes it a HOME.

5. Going to Church

And lastly, we cap our usual Sunday by attending the mass. Just like our other activities, we find that this is an important part of our Sunday routine. This is the time that we pray and give thanks for the entire week that passed. And this is something that we really teach our daughter to pray and talk to her "angel sister".

So these are our usual Sunday activities. It may be different from yours but we find that these things work for us. We know that someday, these will change, but as long as we have instilled these to our daughter, it's worth it.

The goal in every family day is to keep the relationship stronger. It can be any day of the week. The important thing is you need to have one!
